Dr. György Kecskés DLA

Dr. György Kecskés DLAGyörgy Kecskés was born in Kecskemét. He graduated at Ferenc Liszt Teacher Training School in Szeged. He continued his studies at the Debrecen Faculty of the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in the class of Professor Miklós Kökényessy where he graduated with merit as an artist and –teacher of the horn in 1993.

He was a member of the Salieri Chamber Orchestra (led by Tamás Pál) between 1991 and 2000, where he took part in numerous tours and recordings.  He became the section leader (1st hornist) of the Orchestra of the Szeged National Theatre in 1993. From 2002 1st hornist, from 2011 section leader of Szeged Symphony Orchestra.

As a soloist and member of different chamber music ensembles he often takes part in the musical life of Szeged, i.e. Autumn – and Spring Cultural Festivals of the University of Szeged, Festivals of Religious Music in Szeged, the “Musical Album” series of Károly Somogyi City Library, and István Vántus Contemporary Music Days playing the pieces of Hungarian contemporary composers.

He has had various recitals in Hungary, Serbia, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Romania under baton of Ádám Medveczky, Tamás Pál, Sándor Gyüdi, Laszlo Molnár.

He has been a lecturer at the Faculty of Music of the University of Szeged, teaching horn-playing, didactics, methodology, chamber music and the basics of horn playing to different brass players.

He worked as an assistant lecturer between 2008-2010, and as an assistant professor between 2010 and 2015. Since July of 2015 he has been an associate professor.

He is a regular consultant of theses of students of the Music Faculty of the University of Szeged.

He also helps his students with the preparations for their exam recitals, competitions and auditions.

During his classes he introduces the initiatives of the historian horn-playing and its techniques.

For this reason he organized a workshop with one of his former students, Ferenc Varga, who is now a member of a Vienna-based historic ensemble “Orchestra Wiener Akademie” led by Martin Haselböck.

Learning the new techniques, reading the new notations, understanding and playing contemporary music for brass and horn well – are also very important parts of his students’ education He helps his students to pick 20th and 21st centuries’ repertoire of the horn through his experiences.

His graduated students are teaching at elementary music schools, music high schools and working at different symphony orchestras in Hungary and abroad as  well, e.g. Symphony Orchestra of Miskolc, Pannon Philharmonic Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra of the Slovenian National Theatre in Maribor, Cairo Symphony Orchestra, Orchester Wiener Akademie (Austria).

At the Doctoral School of Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest he received his DLA (Doctor Liberal of Arts) with Summa Cum Laude merit in 2010. The members of the Orchestra of the National Theatre of Szeged elected him as “The best musician of the 1999-2000 year” by ballot.  The membership of the Szeged Symphony Orchestra elected him as “The bestartist of the Year” twice in 2005 and 2011.
