Competition Announcement

The Music Department of the University of Szeged is pleased to announce the 7th International Béla Bartók Piano Competition, to be held between March 20-25, 2017. The competition will take place in Szeged (Hungary), at the Ferenc Fricsay Concert Hall. (Szeged, Tisza Lajos krt. 79-81)

The competition consists of three rounds. The preliminary round is dedicated to solo works, the semi-final round to solo and chamber music, while in the final round a concerto will be performed with orchestral accompaniment. In the first and second round the repertoire must include one selection from each category listed (a,b,c,d). A single piece or set of pieces should be chosen from the list under entry d).

Preliminary round (max. 25 minutes)

  1. one virtuoso Sonata by Scarlatti
  2. one piece by Franz Liszt
  3. selections from Bartók: For Children (Books I-IV)
  4. one piece, or selections from the following Bartók pieces:
    1. Fourteen Bagatelles, Op.6, BB 50 (selections)
    2. Ten Easy Pieces, BB 51
    3. Three Burlesques, Op. 8c, BB 55 (I., II., III. burlesque)
    4. Allegro Barbaro, BB 63
    5. Romanian Christmas Carols, BB 67 (I., II. set)
    6. Romanian Folk Dances, BB 68
    7. Sonatina, BB 69
    8. Three Rondos on Folk Tunes, BB 92 (I., II., III. rondo)

Semi-final round (max. 35 minutes without the compulsory Weiner movement)

  1. Leó Weiner: Sonata for Violin and Piano in D major Op. 9 (one movement of the complete piece will be chosen by the jury the day before)
  2. one Etude by Chopin, Rachmaninov, Skriabin, Prokofiev, Dohnányi or Ligeti
  3. one piece or cycle by Debussy
  4. one piece or selections from the following Bartók pieces:
    1. Two Romanian Folk Dances, Op. 8a, BB 56 – 1. Allegro vivace
    2. Two Romanian Folk Dances, Op. 8a, BB 56 – 2. Poco allegro
    3. Suite, Op. 14, BB 70
    4. Fifteen Hungarian Peasant Songs, BB 79
    5. Studies, Op. 18, BB 81
    6. Eight Improvizations on Hungarian Peasant Songs, Op. 20, BB 83
    7. Sonata for Piano, BB 88
    8. Out of Doors, BB 89 (I., II. book)
    9. Mikrokosmos, BB 105, V., VI. book

III. Final round – choice of any one concerto from the following:

  1. Mozart: Concerto in d Minor, K. 466
  2. Mozart: Concerto in A Major, K. 488
  3. Liszt: Concerto in A Major
  4. Liszt: Concerto in E-flat Major
  5. Bartók: Piano Concerto No. 3

**With the exception of the compulsory composition in the semi-final round by Leó Weiner (Sonata for Violin and Piano), all pieces are to be performed by memory. The violinist partner will be provided by the Music Department of the Szeged University.

The concerto will be performed with the Szeged Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Sándor Gyüdi. The final round and the gala concert will take place in the National Theater of Szeged – Small Theatre.

  • György Nádor – Chairman of the Jury (HU) Professor Emeritus of Piano, the Franz Liszt Academy of Music, Budapest. Károly Mocsári – international concert pianist (HU).
  • Manuela Mihailescu – pianist (RO), Professor of the Temesvár Vest University Music Department.
  • Torma Gabriella – international concert pianist (F).
  • Adrienne Krausz – international concert pianist (CH).
  • Zoltán Zsigmond – pianist (HU) Head of Piano Department, University of Szeged Music Department.

Competition rules and application procedures:

  • Applications are accepted from all countries by competitors born after January 1, 1985.
  • 1st,2nd and 3rd place winners of the 6th International Béla Bartók Piano Competition are not eligible to apply.

  • Application fees are non-refundable in case of withdrawal from the competition for any reason.
  • Contestants are financially responsible for their own travel expenses and accommodation.

  • high resolution photo portrait (min 600 dpi)
  • list of selected repertoire
  • short professional biography.

All participants must present a valid passport or photo identification upon registration.

Prizes:

  • 1st Prize: 500.000 HUF (cca. $1800 USD)
  • 2ndPrize: 400.000 HUF (cca. $1400 USD)
  • 3rdPrize: 300.000HUF (cca. $1000 USD)

Additional prizes and concert engagements will be awarded by the Jury as well.

The Judges reserve the right to rearrange the distribution of prizes.

The decision of the Jury is final and not subject to questions, revisions or any kind of (including legal) appeal.

All competition events may be broadcast and recorded by the media. By participating, contestants waive their rights to compensation for such audio and video recordings.

In case of disputes, the Hungarian law prevails.
