Carolyn Zhang Yu

Carolyn Zhang Yu is a Chinese coloratura soprano opera singer living and performing in Hungary.  She graduated from Xi′an Conservatory of Music (Shaanxi, China) in 2003 and then completed her master’s degree studies at the Faculty of Music of the University of Szeged with excellent results where she also acquired good language skills in Hungarian.

Carolyn is the only active Chinese opera singer in Hungary.  She was starring in popular operas and operettas in Hungarian theatres and on some other stages throughout the country.  For example, she has played the leading role in operettas like the “Skylark” (Pacsirta), “The Bat” (Die Fledermaus), and “The Gipsy Love” (Cigányszerelem); additionally, in operas such as “The Magic Flute” (Die Zauberflöte), “La traviata” and “Turandot”.  

In 2011, a CD collection of her songs with the title “Oriental Skylark over the Danube” was released to the public.   She often appears on famous Hungarian singers’ and musicians’ concerts and Hungarian television programs such as Ridikül and Fábry show.

During her career of 15 years she has received awards in several international singing competitions.  In 2017, she received the EURO-Sino Cultural Achievement Award.

At present Carolyn is the only Chinese origin university music teacher in Hungary.  She is also the head of the music section of the Hungarian-Chinese Cultural Center settled in Budapest.  One of her most important goals is to become Hungary’s cultural ambassador in China, so she started teaching Hungarian folk songs and dances to Chinese people.  With her versatile musical activity she committed herself to the mediation and mutual introduction of both countries’ culture in China and Hungary.
